The choice of what to wear should be for each woman herself to decide, yet the hijab has been commandeered for political power, Shabina Begum, family law consultant at Dawson Cornwell, and Marisa Razeek, treaty negotiator and lawyer, write in NLJ this week
Women are compelled either by law or by social pressure to wear the hijab in some countries, and face restrictions from wearing it in others. Begum and Razeek look at case law in the UK on this subject as well as French legislation and a European Court of Human Rights case on France’s 2011 burka ban.
