Employment Lawyers’ Association: Take the racial equity challenge

The Employment Lawyers’ Association (ELA) is launching a 21 Day Racial Habit-Building Challenge for members to help advance the conversation around race in the UK

Originally the brainchild of US educator Dr Eddie Moore Jr, the challenge involves accessing relevant resources over the period with the aim of stimulating debate and developing greater awareness about the issues faced by those from black and ethnic minority backgrounds. Participants receive a daily email with a link to an article, podcast or resource giving an insight into the lived experience of black and Asian people.

The challenge launches on 21 January.

Paul McFarlane, ELA deputy chair and partner at Capsticks, said: ‘By sharing resources every day which don’t take long to read, watch or listen to we hope to help educate and most importantly―stimulate conversation. Over the 21 days I hope those taking part in the challenge feel they have more confidence, knowledge and a wider vocabulary to talk about race issues.

‘Employment lawyers are so familiar with equality law but it’s not always easy to truly understand the issues if you haven’t experienced them personally. By giving a face and voice to race issues in this country through these resources we hope this challenge not only helps employment lawyers in their legal work and supporting clients, but also within law firms, by opening up discussions on racism in the workplace and how the profession can become more inclusive.’
