The Law Society has commented on the latest official statistics published by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) concerning the diversity of the judiciary in England and Wales.

Lexis® update: The MoJ report, titled 'Diversity of the judiciary: Legal professions, new appointments and current post-holders—2023 Statistics', was published in July 2023, setting out the annual official statistics on judicial diversity.

The Law Society has commented that these statistics highlight the need for a swifter progress in improving judicial diversity. President of the Law Society of England and Wales, Lubna Shuja, acknowledges that some progress has been made, but that 'women still only make up just over a third of judges', that the proportion of judges from a non-barrister background is 'persistently low' and that urgent reform is needed regarding the selection process.

The 2023 statistics are accessible here.
