The government has published its response to a call for views on proposals for UK domestic legislation to regulate the cyber security of smart devices, including smart speakers, smart televisions, connected doorbells and smartphones.

Lexis®Library update: Following the call for views, which ran between 16 July 2020 and 6 September 2020, the government’s response provides an overview of how it intends to proceed, including updated policy intentions for proposed legislation to regulate the cyber security of smart devices, as well as the government’s own responses to the feedback received during the consultation.

Following the call for evidence, the government plans to introduce new laws in an effort to protect customers with smart devices from cyber threats. Under these new laws, smart devices would be required to inform customers at the point of sale the duration of time for which a smart device will receive security software updates. In addition, manufacturers would be banned from using universal default passwords, such as ‘password’ or ‘admin’, as well as be required to provide a public of contact in order to make it simpler for anyone to report a vulnerability.

The government’s response can be found in full here.
