The Law Society has warned that the government’s stance on criminal legal aid is driving solicitors to consider unionising to take direct action, following the barrister strike action earlier this year.

Lexis®Library update: According to the Law Society, criminal legal aid firm owners are awaiting the government’s final response to its Independent Review of Criminal Legal Aid after it refused to implement a 15% increase for criminal defence solicitors.

The Law Society has said: ‘If the government doesn’t give solicitors parity when their full response to the review is published later this month, we will advise our members that there is no viable future in criminal legal aid work.’
