Lexis®Library update: Among other things, the Bill will ‘re-focus’ the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017, SI 2017/1012 (the Habitats Regulations) towards new, legally-binding environmental targets such as protecting 30% of terrestrial land by 2030, and reversing the decline of British species, such as hedgehogs, red squirrels and water voles. The government is set to publish a Green Paper on the reform of the Habitats Regulations later in 2021, which will set out how the ambition will be delivered.
Other issues the Bill will address include reducing waste, making better use of resources, and improving management of water resources in the context of climate change.
