In brief

Accountable and transparent governance is key to helping charities protect themselves from terrorist exploitation, says the Charity Commission. In its response to the Home Office/HM Treasury review on protecting the sector from terrorist abuse, the commission says the incidence of terrorist involvement with charities is rare, so the response must be proportionate. It says it will act swiftly and decisively where deliberate wrongdoing, criminality and abuse takes place. The Treasury has committed additional funding of £1m in 2007–08 to increase the commission’s capacity for tackling terrorist links and promoting public trust in charities.
