Low-paid workers are to receive more workplace protections under the government’s ‘Good work plan’, business secretary Greg Clark announced this week.

Proposals now out for consultation, with responses due by 6 October, include the creation of a single labour market enforcement body with powers to enforce minimum wage and holiday payments and potentially enforce workplace discrimination, harassment and bullying laws. Peter Cheese, chief executive of human resources body the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said: ‘Tougher enforcement needs to go hand in hand with better support for businesses, many of which can fall foul of employment legislation unwittingly.’
