Records of internet usage will have to be kept by phone and internet companies and made available to the police under new government proposals. The Communications Data Bill—which will implement the remainder of the European Union’s Data Retention Directive— extends regulations enacted last October which forced telcos to keep records of phone calls to and from land lines and mobile telephones. That requirement will be widened to records of customers’ internet and e-mail usage records.
