Self-employed workers and their partners are to gain maternity and pension benefits under EU legislation that came into force last week.
The Directive on self-employed workers and assisting spouses grants women a maternity allowance and a leave of at least 14 weeks, and could help to encourage women entrepreneurs. Currently, only one in three entrepreneurs is a woman. Member states have two years to bring it into national law.
