The government has ditched plans to give the attorney general powers to order media organisations to remove stories that could prejudice criminal trials from online archives. The plans, contained in the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill, which is currently in the House of Lords, aimed to stifle the risk of contempt where jurors carry out their own online research. In a written statement, attorney general Dominic Grieve QC said the government had listened to the “disquiet” voiced by sections of the media.
