Lord Justice Tim Holroyde has been appointed Chairman of the Sentencing Council for the next three years.
Holroyde LJ, who takes office on 1 August, has been a member of the Council since 2015. He was called to the Bar in 1977, joining chambers in Liverpool and practising on the Northern Circuit until 2008. Notable cases include prosecuting in the trial arising out of the drowning of 23 Chinese cocklepickers in Morecambe Bay. As a judge, he presided over the 2012 trial of Asil Nadir for theft from Polly Peck and the trial of Dale Cregan for the murder of PC Fiona Bone and PC Nicola Hughes.
He said he aimed to provide guidelines that ‘promote a clear, fair and consistent approach to sentencing, but which are also accessible to the public so they can see how sentencing works and have greater confidence in the sentencing process’.
Holroyde takes over from Lord Justice Treacy.
