The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has published a report which highlights the dependency on two vendors for the UK’s 5G rollout
Lexis®Library update: The Committee reports that this poses risks to network security and resilience. The report cautions against repetitive mistakes being made as new and prominent technologies evolve, thus MPs call upon the government to publish 'a new assessment of the risks of global technological divergence of standards—and the UK's action plan—within 12 months.'

Following evidence from an inquiry, the report also sets out recommendations that there should be a programme of research and development managed by the government, a range of measures to diversify the market and international co-operation. The Committee states that the strategy should be accompanied by an action plan to implement the strategy.

The Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, said: ‘In a White Paper, the Government must urgently lay out a strategy for the most important technologies of the future to avoid repeating the supplier squeeze we have ended up with in 5G.’

For more information, read the report here and the inquiry here.
