The European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust) has published recommendations for judicial practitioners regarding the execution of European Arrest Warrants (EAWs) during coronavirus (COVID-19).

Lexis®Library update: It also advices on European Investigation Orders (EIOs) and requests for mutual legal assistance. The report analyses the 128 requests which have been sent to the Agency between April–June2020 during the coronavirus lockdown, which had caused unexpected practical problems.

The report discussed how, at the start of the pandemic, ‘the Agency rapidly changed to a fully digitalised working environment and provided practitioners advice on how to enable this’. Eurojust says that the report reflects the need among practitioners in all Member States for ‘a rapid and complete digitalisation of justice across the European Union’. In addition, the European Commission has tasked Eurojust with rolling out a Digital Justice programme which is expected to play a central role in its implementation.

The report in full can be read here.
