Nine of the UK’s leading law firms have signed up to a literacy challenge with the National Literacy Trust. The Vision for Literacy Business Pledge has been signed by Baker & McKenzie, Slaughter and May, Clifford Chance, Bird & Bird, Allen & Overy and Norton Rose Fulbright. The pledge commits the firms to help raise literacy levels in the UK. Activities include running book clubs, and taking part in volunteer reading programmes with schoolchildren. Shockingly, more than a third of adults in the UK’s most deprived areas lack the literacy skills of an 11-year-old.
