The Law Society has launched a telephone helpline to direct victims of the riots and looting to pro bono legal advice
Individuals, community groups and small businesses affected by the riots and looting can obtain free legal advice on matters ranging from insurance and compensation to contractual, property and employment law thanks to a pro bono initiative launched by the Law Society, working in collaboration with law firms and the charity LawWorks. A full time caseworker at the National Pro Bono Centre will match applications for legal assistance with volunteer lawyers.
Law Society president John Wotton said: “I have been hugely impressed by the response of solicitors so far who are demonstrating yet again their commitment to a just and stable society and urge others to join the movement.”
More information is available at www.lawworks.org.uk/riothelp. The helpline number is 020 7092 3949. Solicitors wishing to help should email: Riothelp@lawworks.org.uk. The Law Society, Bar Council and several law firms have pledged financial support for the helpline.
