The government should heed calls to provide legal aid for bereaved families at inquests, writes NLJ columnist Jon Robins this week. A request for legal aid for families was a key recommendation of the Bishop of Liverpool’s 122-page review of the Hillsborough football stadium disaster earlier this month.

On the same day the review was published, it was revealed that the Shoreham Air Show disaster victim’s families have been denied legal aid. Local MP Tim Laughton said the families were likely to be the only persons at the inquest not legally represented.
