Hudson stepping down after eight years at the helm

Desmond Hudson, chief executive of the Law Society, is retiring from his post.

He will leave the Society after this year’s AGM, having served as chief executive since September 2006.

In those eight years, he has campaigned to raise public awareness of solicitors’ expertise and led initiatives to improve the quality of legal services provision, including the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme, Risk and Compliance Service and the Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme.

However, his tenure was marred by a vote of no confidence in his leadership last year over the Law Society’s handling of negotiations with the Ministry of Justice about legal aid cuts for criminal practitioners.

Hudson says: “It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve the Law Society during this time of change for the legal profession and I look forward to continuing to do so until I depart.”

President of the Society, Nick Fluck, says: “He will be a tough act to follow.”
