Land Registry proposes simpler fees and wider access

The Land Registry has launched two consultations aimed at making its information more publicly accessible, ‘Restructuring HM Land Registry fees’, and ‘Future of access to HM Land Registry information’

Both consultations close on 22 December. The Registry is proposing a simplified approach for registration fees where no money has changed hands or less than market value has been paid. Currently, these are predominantly based on the value of a property, which can be hard to determine.

It is also asking for views on ways to improve access while minimising privacy risks and the impact on revenue, including cost-free access for public sector bodies and researchers who can show a public interest purpose.

Iain Banfield, chief executive, HM Land Registry, said: ‘We need to understand and balance the needs of the thousands of people who use these services.’
