Gaps in understanding of the Bar among students, universities and the profession, career advice, and financial constraints all contribute to a lack of social mobility at the Bar, a major study by Keele University and the Inner Temple has found. The report, Professional Intervention, Social Mobility and Access to the Legal Profession, recommends the Bar communicate more closely with universities to reiterate that recruitment is based on merit rather than background, as well as exploring strategies such as offering expenses for mini-pupillages and sharing knowledge about non-traditional paths to the Bar.
