Gender pay-reporting is not the answer to redressing pay discrepancies, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has warned.
Responding to equality minister Harriet Harman’s Equalities Bill, which proposes introducing requirements for firms to report on the differences in pay between men and women from 2013, Charles Cotton, CIPD reward adviser, says gender pay-reporting is not a “magic bullet” since the causes of the pay gap are “deep-seated” and “complex” and that some of the headline figures are “sensationalist”.
