The Bar Equality and Diversity Code, principally an equal opportunities guidance document for chambers, is to be strengthened to take account of the Equalities Act 2010.

The Bar Equality and Diversity Code, principally an equal opportunities guidance document for chambers, is to be strengthened to take account of the Equalities Act 2010.

Some provisions may become mandatory.

The Bar Standards Board has issued a consultation, asking: should barristers involved in recruitment receive training; should chambers offer members a minimum of six months’ parental leave; should chambers be required to collect equalities data on an annual basis; and should chambers be required to produce written policies on harassment and flexible working? Responses are due in by 1 March 2011.
