Firm launches commercial litigation & business recovery service

Coodes Solicitors has launched a commercial disputes and insolvency team, enhancing the range of legal support the firm can offer to businesses.

Led by Coodes partner and top litigation lawyer Verona Cocks, the new commercial disputes and insolvency department will offer businesses expert legal advice on preventing and tackling disputes. These could range from shareholders actions, contractual disputes, banking or intellectual property disputes to fraud and insolvency litigation. Currently a team of three lawyers, the firm aims to double its size within the next two years.

The new team is part of Coodes’ strategy to grow its commercial work. The firm recently established a business services team, bringing together its specialist business departments across Cornwall and into Devon. This means the firm can better service the range of needs a business might face, from finding the right premises to protecting its brand.

Verona says: “The fact that we are now in a position to launch a specialist team that is dedicated solely to supporting businesses through disputes and insolvency is testament to Coodes’ growing reputation for commercial law. With our thriving commercial property, corporate and commercial, employment and regulatory departments, Coodes is now rightly characterised as a full service commercial law firm.

CEO of Coodes, Gerard Hickie, says: “Through the new commercial disputes and insolvency team, we aim to significantly grow our business services within the south west.”

From gender-critical speech to notice periods and incapability dismissals, employment law continues to turn on fine distinctions. Non-molestation orders are meant to be the frontline defence against domestic abuse, yet their enforcement often falls short. Writing in NLJ this week, Jeni Kavanagh, Jessica Mortimer and Oliver Kavanagh analyse why the criminalisation of breach has failed to deliver consistent protection
Assisted dying remains one of the most fraught fault lines in English law, where compassion and criminal liability sit uncomfortably close. Writing in NLJ this week, Julie Gowland and Barny Croft of Birketts examine how acts motivated by care—booking travel, completing paperwork, or offering emotional support—can still fall within the wide reach of the Suicide Act 1961
